University of Maryland Shooting
A police shooting and crash Thursday night in College Park may have involved a suspect getting behind the wheel of a police cruiser and crashing it into a wall near the University of Maryland campus.
Prince George’s County police say the shooting took place at about 10:20 p.m. in the 4700 block of Lakeland Road in College Park, which is right on the edge of the college campus. Calls to 911 reported a man with a gun, and police say shots were exchanged when officers arrived on the scene.
The suspect reportedly took off, and police pursued him to a McDonald’s at Baltimore Avenue and Berwyn House Road. More gunfire was exchanged, police say, and the suspect was hit. He is in custody and is expected to survive.
Calls to local news channels and a flood of activity on Twitter said that a suspect or multiple suspects had taken a joyride in a police cruiser. Police would make no comment as to whether a vehicle had been taken.
However, multiple photos and videos posted on social media showed a police cruiser that had crashed into a brick barrier at the parking lot of a McDonald’s on Baltimore Avenue. Here’s the video below:
