My two favorite quotes from Durant:

“We’ll bounce back from this. It’s tough right now…the sun is going to shine soon.”

“I wish I could have did a better job for my team to stay in the playoffs cause of course basketball events, sporting events bring everyone together. Takes your mind off of it for a few hours.”

Kevin Durant is an angel.

That Redskins hat is just the cherry on top.” – (via WUSA9)

“This has been a tough semester, a tough year,” said Sandy Johnson, 56. “There are times when you just have to keep breathing. You have to keep going.”

The family did keep going, and it paid off. After nearly nine months without a home of their own, the Johnsons have a new apartment in Hickory Ridge, and Sandy and Jeff both walked across the Merriweather Post Pavilion stage as part of Howard Community College‘s largest graduating class in the school’s 42-year history on Tuesday, May 21

Two Virginia women are being charged with inducing an abortion using herbs they purchased at a local supplement store, according to Norfolk-based WTKR-TV.

The women are Jessica Carpenter, 20, and Rachel Lowe, 27. Court documents allege that Lowe, a former employee of the Tidewater Women’s Clinic in Norfolk, helped Carpenter induce a miscarriage at six months into her pregnancy using a combination of herbs.

Lea Smith, one of their mutual friends, told WTKR-TV that she heard them discussing an induced miscarriage. She contacted police when the infant died after being born prematurely.

Tidewater Women’s Clinic owner Dr. David Peters told the station that Lowe was never involved in any medical procedures, insisting that she was hired to do clerical work and occasionally comfort nervous patients.

He added that inducing a miscarriage with herbal supplements, a practice that goes back hundreds of years, is extremely dangerous and could have killed Carpenter. Peters also noted that the survival rate for babies born after just six months of gestation is “at best 50 percent, maybe 60 percent.” WTKR-TV did not obtain the baby’s autopsy results, and the two accused women refused to comment.

Virginia law considers self-inducing an abortion a Class 4 felony, carrying a jail sentence of no less than two years and no more than 10, along with a fine of up to $100,000.

Virginia is one of the states on the front lines of the anti-abortion movement, passing laws in recent years to require women undergo a medically unnecessary ultrasound before having an abortion and implementing targeted regulations designed to force every last clinic in the state to shut down.

It’s not clear whether these policies affected Carpenter’s situation, but many pro-choice activists believe the prevalence of homespun herbal abortions will increase as women lose access to clinics that perform safe, medically supervised abortions and dispense clinically pure drugs that cause miscarriage.

This video is from WTKR-TV, aired Tuesday, May 21, 2013.

HAMPTON, Virginia – Authorities pulled a car from the water in Hampton, Virginia early Wednesday morning.

The scene in the Riverdale neighborhood closed LaSalle Ave. southbound lanes from Tide Mill Road to Mercury Blvd. The lanes towards Langley Air Force Base are open.

Authorities were called to the scene just after 7:00 a.m. Capt. Jeff Pereira says someone in the neighborhood saw it happen and rescued the driver. Paramedics then took that person to the hospital.

When firefighters and the dive team arrived at the LaSalle Ave. extended bridge, they could only see the tail lights and part of the trunk.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the driver to lose control.

The dive team attached straps to the vehicle so a private contractor with crane could raise it and bring it on land.

Hazmat teams put booms in the water to keep any gasoline and oil spills from spreading.

Service workers at four buildings in Washington, D.C., are going on strike Tuesday, putting a human face on a recent report about federally-contracted workers stuck with unlivable wages. Starting at the Ronald Reagan Building and moving through two Smithsonian museums and Union Station, the city’s commuter rail and Amtrak hub, the strikes are the latest in a wave of low-wage worker actions designed to make service sector employment economically sustainable. The local progressive radio station WeAct Radio is maintaining a livestream of the day’s actions here.

The strike follows similar actions by private-sector workers in other major cities. Fast food and retail workers in New York City, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Chicagohave walked off the job in recent weeks to demand wage hikes. Like those workers, the men and women striking in the capital Tuesday are struggling to tread water economically, even while working full-time. The difference for these most recent participants in the spreading service worker action is that they are paid, indirectly, by the federal government.

As the policy think tank Demos reported in early May, federal dollars are connected tomore low-wage jobs than Walmart and McDonalds combined:

We find that nearly two million private sector employees working on behalf of America earn wages too low to support a family, making $12 or less per hour. […]

These workers represent a large spectrum of occupations, from workers sewing military uniforms to hospital aides funded by Medicare, security guards with contracts to protect public buildings, and food cart vendors at the National Zoo.

President Obama has proposed hiking the federal minimum hourly wage to $9, from its current $7.25 level. While opponents point to gradual increases from 2008-2010 as sufficient, the reality is the minimum wage still has less buying power than it did in the 1970s.

This public policy failure is also a major component of the gender wage gap that persists today. Working Americans in six major cities are now organizing to combat Congress’ failure to ensure that service work is livable.
