Joshua Weissman, 33, was pronounced dead after 4 p.m., said Chief Fire Marshal Robert Rodriguez of the Alexandria Fire Department. Weissman was climbing over a cement barrier along the interstate to get to a burning vehicle Wednesday evening when he fell through a large gap between the barriers and dropped 30 feet into Four Mile Creek, police and fire officials said after the accident.
The Arlington County and Alexandria fire departments had been called shortly before 6:30 p.m to an overpass in the HOV lanes in Shirlington for the report of a vehicle fire, Dustin Sternbeck, an Arlington police spokesman, said Wednesday.
An Alexandria fire and EMS ambulance stopped in the northbound lanes of I-395 to reach the burning vehicle. Weissman fell in his efforts to reach the vehicle and was rescued by firefighters from Alexandria City and Arlington County.
