The Trillectro Experience

On Saturday, August 27, the 5th annual Trillectro Music Festival took place. Located at the Merriweather Post Pavilion, the music festival has seen tremendous growth over the years…from the humble beginnings in 2012, to what it has blossomed into today. This year YesJulz was the host while, she was backed by DJ QuikSilva as the house DJ.

Arriving a little later than most, I started off at the 9:32 Stage during MistaSelecta’s set when he brought out WillThaRapper. I’ve seen him perform several times throughout the summer but this was definitely my favorite performance of his. The crowd was definitely rocking with him when he pulled up.

Up next was Jay IDK who is one of the more underrated rappers from the DMV area. During his performance he definitely lived up to his name because he was dropping knowledge throughout his set. Hopefully once his album “Empty Bank” drops on Sept. 9, he will become more of a household name.

As my time at the 9:32 Stage came to a close, I transitioned over to the main stage in time to catch Lil Uzi Vert’s set. I’ve seen him gain notoriety over this past year so I had to check out all the hype, now I see why he’s in with the younger crowd.

After his set was GoldLink’s. One thing I love about GoldLink is his sound. Rapping to beats similar to what you would hear in house music is no easy task, but GoldLink has mastered it. Performing with a live band gave him brownie points with me too. GoldLink also brought out Shy Glizzy during his set to perform Cut It and Awwsome.

Here’s where Trillectro turnt up a few notches. Rae Sremmurd came out and completely tore the stage down. Their energy is unmatched and unwavering. Song after song the two of them fed off each other’s energy and the crowd. Performing a melody of songs from Sremmlife and Sremmlife II, this was easily my favorite performance of the year.

After letting the fans simmer down for a little bit, Kid Cudi closed out the show. He started off with a few of his songs from Speedin Bullet to Heaven. This got the crowd up on their feet yet again which lead to a smooth transition to some of Cudi’s classics. Once he performed Pursuit of Happiness, you would have thought he was finished. After the crowd called for an encore, Cudi returned with an unreleased track produced by Pharrell entitled Magic.

Trillectro was definitely a dope experience that everyone from the DMV should experience at least once. Being that it was my first, I definitely made some lasting memories. One couldn’t have imagined a better way to close out the summer.
